Roofers and Scaffolders

Audited Membership demonstrates safety, experience and professionalism.

There are several trade associations specific to the roofing and scaffolding sectors.

Most well known are –

  • National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC)
  • National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC)

Membership requires a rigorous application process, to certify potential members have a high standard of Health & Safety and quality procedures. The NFRC Safe2Torch Guidance details hot works management, and the NASC TG20 Guidance covers scaffold design and erection, both requiring high standards. Annual audits are undertaken to verify compliance with these procedures. Members are provided with training and support to ensure they maintain these standards. Their low-frequency reported claims are reflective of the criteria imposed by the Trade bodies.

There are other associations that also demand high standards of professionalism, quality and Health & Safety.

Confederation of Roofing Contractors

CORC are a long established trade association who apply a Code of Conduct to their members. This requires them to be fully compliant with all Building Regulations, all H&S regulations laid down by the HSE, and that all materials used are to BS, EN or any other CORC approved quality accreditation. Members sign up to this Code of Conduct on an annual basis. To become a member, a company must have been trading for a minimum of 2 years.

Lead Contractors Association

The LCA cover another specialist area, where members are roofing contractors undertaking lead work. Like the FTMRC, members are regularly vetted and graded on their work, with compulsory on-site inspections where they are assessed on quality of workmanship. They must follow the British Standard Code of Practice for Leadwork, and the recommendations laid out in the Lead Contractors Association authorised Guides. They benefit from a training academy, and ongoing support and guidance.

Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors

The FTMRC cover a more specialist area of roofing, those involved in the installation of traditional metal roofing such as galvanised & stainless steel, copper, aluminium and zinc. Prospective members are vetted to establish competency and professionalism, and they benefit from the branded reputation, training provision and ongoing support. Members must follow the ‘Guide to Good Practice’ which covers technical guidance on materials and installation, as well as stringent Health & Safety requirements.

On-site inspections are regularly undertaken to check that high quality installations are undertaken by its members. Quality is graded and frequency of follow up inspections are determined by that grade. These grades are available to the public.

Scaffolders Association

There are three tiers of the SA – Associate, Assessed and Audited Membership.

Associate members have access to specialist information and support, but are not endorsed by the SA and therefore cannot state that they are members of the SA. Assessed Members are those that hold an in date SSIP certificate and are recognised as working Members.

Audited Membership demonstrates safety, experience and professionalism. Membership involves third party audits to ensure they are working to a particular standard. Members benefit from technical training, and must follow best practice requirements. Safety is key and the SA works closely with the HSE to review and assess incidents in the industry to learn and improve on safety issues.
