This month we’re shining the spotlight on Sam Lord, our New Business Team Leader. Since joining Touchstone in 2017, Sam has built a wealth of underwriting expertise and now leads our new business team.
Read Sam’s story and discover the person behind the role.
How long have you been with Touchstone?
I joined Touchstone as an Underwriter in September 2017
What does a typical day look like for you?
As New Business Team Leader, a typical day for me involves:
– Overseeing the new business team – setting workloads and reviewing new submissions to ensure quotations are issued efficiently
– Mentoring underwriters including handlinginternal referrals
– Managing broker and insurer relationships
– Running data reports to monitor team performance
– Meetings!
What is one thing people might be surprised to learn about your job?
I know this is a bit of a cliche but just how every day is different and how rewarding it can be – busy yes, but absolutely worth it as everyday you learn something new.
What has been your proudest achievement so far?
My proudest achievement was being elected President of the Insurance Institute of Chelmsford and South Essex (IICSE) in 2022. I have been on the IICSE Council since 2016 and am currently Vice President and Dinner Secretary. I love being able to support give back to our local CII and PFS members!
Do you have any pets?
I have two beautiful cats – Albus and Ollie who are my fluffy little terrors 🙂
What’s your favourite food or guilty pleasure?
My favourite foods are chicken nuggets, anything that involves salted caramel, and olives (not together of course!)
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy reading, movies, playing netball, catching up with family and friends and holidaying!
What is your favourite book and why?
This is a tough question as I enjoy a mix of genres and have a lot of favourites, but I would say my most memorable book is JRR Tolken’s The Hobbit as this is the first book I remember reading myself at a young age and ignited my passion for reading!
What’s one fun fact about yourself?
I have been an avid fan of Take That since I was little (thanks to my Mum and Sisters) – this was me meeting them when I was 4 years old!
